The painting was given by Empress Eugenia de Montijo, wife of Napoleon III, niece of the portrayed, to Don Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart, 17th Duke of Alba.
Ángel M. de Barcia says of this canvas that it can be included among the “masterpieces of Goya”. In fact, its qualities do not detract from the most famous of the XIII Duchess of Alba. Its date is not known, but for stylistic reasons almost all critics place it around 1800.
